Courses
spring 2009
In 2008 LEI has organized several courses on the usage of LEI specific software for research. In 2009 we will continue these courses and below you will find a summary of the courses for February 2009. When there is enough interest these courses will be repeated after the summer break. Courses are free for anyone (course is limited to 15 people). When you want to attend a course, please send a mail to Wietse.Dol@wur.nl All courses start at 9.00 hours and end at 16.00 hours and will be held in our computer classroom (GDR room, 2nd floor). This means that everyone can have hands-on experience of the topics discussed in the courses.

Cursus Inleiding GAMS: dinsdag 17
februari 2009
Eurostat, Faostat, handelsdata, model data). Elke
internationaal onderzoek).
Course
GAMS tools Friday 20 February 2009
LEI has developed many useful GAMS tools that will help model builders and people that use GAMS in complex calculations/aggregations. In this course; held in the GDR room; you will learn (with examples) to use the following tools:
· Gtree: GAMSide replacement with tree functionality
·
DataExplorer: view GDX files, make tables, graphs and GIS
maps
·
GSE:
GAMS Simulation Environment a Version and Scenario control system
·
GDXmerge:
a different way of merging GDX files, i.e. really merging two GDX files
·
SQL2GAMS2:
connect to any database and generate a GDX file from a table or query
·
GIS:
a free GIS tools
·
And
some others
If you are interested (this course is free for everyone) please send me a mail (stating GAMS Tools 20 February 2009). The language spoken in this course will depend on its participants, please mail also your language preference.
Course
MetaBase, Data Explorer and GIS: Thursday 26 February 2009
MetaBase is the LEI standard for retrieving and manipulating data. Not only LEI data but also data from many other suppliers (Eurostat, Faostat, International trade data, model data) is available through MetaBase using one user interface. Using MetaBase will save you time, but above all it will enhance the quality of your research. Experts are working on MetaBase to keep it up-to-date, check the data and extend the system with new data. Also additional (meta)information over the data is supplied by MetaBase.
On February 26th a course on MetaBase will be organized in the our GDR room. Everybody will use the computer to learn the potentials of MetaBase and other data tools. The course will be in English and not only LEI people are invited, i.e. the course is open/free for research partners of LEI. When interested, please send a mail (stating MetaBase 26 February).
Advanced
MetaBase course: Friday 27 February 2009
For people that want to know how MetaBase is working and for those who want to be able to add own/other data in MetaBase: on Tuesday September 30th an advanced MetaBase course will be held. In this course we will explain the underlying database system (so you can add your own data). Much attention will be paid to data conversion (e.g. ASCII data) and tools to convert data. Also the power of GAMS is demonstrated. Model builders and power data users can use MetaBase in combination with GAMS to do aggregations and complex (conditional) calculations. With examples and hands-on experience we will explain the advanced topics of MetaBase. If you are interested (this course is free for everyone) please send a mail (stating Advanced MetaBase 27 February).
